Confidential File -Secret Chapters- Directory

Because the content I've translated / scanned from this book is scattered across this blog on multiple pages, I've decided to put together a directory of the content in the book so readers can more easily find what they're looking for. Please note that as I haven't translated the entire book and god knows I probably never will, the unlinked sections below are not (yet?) included on this blog. If anyone's still reading this long-neglected blog, this would be the place to request specific translations in the comments, though! Prologue Q&A For Strangers in Paradise This section primarily teaches how to play the game so it's likely I won't be translating it. The story unravels the truth that the Strangers and people of Cornelia are living in a world that had been reset many times. Because this text contains information that touches on the core of the story, you should read on after seeing the ending of the game.

Jack Garland

Age: 32
Height: 181cm
Voice Cast: Kenjiro Tsuda / Mocean Melvin

The Stranger holding the key to the grand scheme

A veteran Stranger dispatched to Cornelia. Under the influence of the black crystal and Lufenian memory manipulation, he forgets even his own name, and fights viciously, driven by a thirst to defeat Chaos. At first, he has no interest in his memories; rather, he sees them as distractions, but at the end of his long journey he achieves the true goal which he had forgotten.

At the end of the game, Jack appears clad in jet-black armor. Small details of the armor are different from that of Chaos Advent, fought in the Chaos Shrine.

The plan Jack hatched in the past

After being dispatched to Cornelia many times and having his memories erased every time, Jack has realized that the world is but an experiment for the Lufenians to toy with. Trying to fight the Lufenians' tyranny, he devises a plan to become Chaos himself and cut Cornelia off from the Lufenians. He asks his companion, the organic reconnaissance unit Astos, to become his guide in realizing his plan.

Ash

The nice guy who faces missions with diligence

Age: 30
Height: 190cm
Voice Cast: Atsushi Miyauchi / Mark Neely

Alighting to Cornelia just the same as Jack, a coolheaded and collected Stranger. He greatly trusts Jack and his superior abilities in battle. Fragmented memories of his travel in the past worlds with Jack remain with him, and he's willing to suffer injury for the sake of carrying out Jack's plan. He's calm at all times, but doesn't take well to being startled suddenly.

Jed

The spirited youth who wants to be like Jack

Age: 22
Height: 173cm
Voice Cast: Yusuke Suda / Alejandro Saab

A bright and outgoing young Stranger who works alongside Jack. He has a strong admiration and respect for Jack and the overwhelming strength he boasts. Like Ash, he relies on the fragmented memories of his past that remain in order to help Jack's plan come to fruition. He has a habit of saying whatever is on his mind, often earning reproach from Jack and Neon.

The indirect cause of a complex

While in his "hometown," Jed disparaged himself for being a commoner. Though his prowess as a Stranger is not in question, he may be comparing himself to Jack -- a well-known, skilled agent -- and making himself feel more inferior than necessary.

Neon

A warrior who leads others through self-sacrifice

Age: 18
Height: 160cm
Voice Cast: Kana Okazaki / Alejandra Reynoso

A girl skilled in pairing magic with the sword. Born and raised in Cornelia, she attained equal power to that of the Strangers when she was given a dark crystal by Astos. After meeting Jack and the others as Chaos Advent she becomes their companion, and retaining some faint memories, she joins in the plan that Jack made in the past.

A reason for becoming Chaos

Before meeting Jack and the others, Neon sets out on a journey to eradicate Chaos, and arrives at the conclusion that Chaos is simply a doomsday theory concept born of the people. She had decided to become, and overcome, Chaos, she could shatter the people's illusion that defeating Chaos will save the world.

Sophia

A confident female Stranger

Age: 37
Height: 166cm
Voice Cast: Mayumi Asano / Laura Post

A woman who specializes in magic, who landed in Cornelia before Jack and the others. She retains many more memories of past battles than Ash or Jed, and as a result is more knowledgeable about the world. She intends to guide the plan that has failed so many times to success, through bringing the party's memories together.

Sophia's body preserved in her fiend

When Sophia fell to darkness and became the fiend of wind in a past cycle* in the Flying Fortress, her form remained as a part of Tiamat. As a result, when the world is reset, she continues to emerge as Tiamat each time. The Sophia who joins Jack is formed by a combination of her body, which is released when Tiamat is defeated, and her memories that remained in the world.

Astos

The guide who hides his grief to lead Jack

Age: Unknown
Height: 200cm
Voice Cast: Yoji Ueda / Todd Haberkorn

The dark elf who leads Jack and his friends. An organic reconnaissance unit created by the Lufenians to observe and report on the balance of light and darkness, he also once served as support to the Strangers. In a past world he joined Jack as a companion on his journey, and was entrusted with the great task of guiding him in his plan to save Cornelia. He holds a strong belief in Jack, but also harbors bitter feelings of resentment as a result of being forgotten by him over and over.

Sarah

The princess who is a symbol of hope to Cornelia

Age: 19
Height: 158cm
Voice Cast: Yume Miyamoto / Cherami Leigh

A well-mannered princess adored by all. Both sweet and strong-hearted, she strives to fulfill her royal duties with great dignity. As a result of receiving a dark crystal from Jack in a past world, she retains dim memories of the past, and awaits the return of a knight named Garland who has set out on a journey.

Sarah is proficient in lute-playing. She practices a song she once heard from Jack, and often plays it for others.

Bikke

Age: 40
Height: 189cm
Voice Cast: Kosuke Goto / Jake Eberle

The captain overseeing the pirates

The leader of the pirates who run Pravoka. He partakes in wrongdoing for the sake of survival, but he's not a bad guy at heart. He's supported by his underlings because of how well he treats them. He's entered into a contract with Astos: in exchange for knowledge and abilities, Bikke is to lead Jack to Astos on his search for Chaos.

King of Cornelia

Age: 56
Height: 176cm
Voice Cast: Mugihito / Fred Tatasciore

A king eagerly in wait of the warriors of light

The monarch who rules Cornelia like a calm and gentle father. While he believes that Chaos is a fictional monster, he does not deny Jack's desire to bring down Chaos, and asks him to restore the crystals' light.

Minister Lagone

Age: 48
Height: 171cm
Voice Cast: Akio Hirose / Tom Taylorson

A loyal subject involved in governmental affairs

A minister devoted to his country and royal family, if not a bit strict. Because he is involved in compiling Cornelia's history, he's knowledgeable about its prophecies and folklore, and has taken up the pen to personally record traces of the warriors of light.

Queen Jayne

Age: 53
Height: 157cm
Voice Cast: Miyuki Ichijo / Mary Elizabeth McGlynn

An elegant woman who cares for her daughters

The queen of Cornelia who treats her two daughters with kindness. Though uninvolved of the governmental affairs of the royal family, she supports the king n other ways. She has calm demeanor, and considers her daughters and her people before all else.

Mia

The innocent younger princess

Age: 11
Height: 142cm
Voice Cast: Natsuki Inaba / Isabella Crovetti

Bright as the sun, the second princess of Cornelia. Though young she is firm, and often chastises Minister Lagone for being hard on Jack and his companions.

Lufenian

Age: Unknown
Height: 187cm
Voice Cast: Kimiko Saito / Mari Weiss

Trial and error for a sound future

The peoples plucking the strangers from other dimensions to manage balance the light and darkness in the world. Each time the balance of light and darkness collapses, they've been using the dimensional crystal matrix to repeatedly reset the world. Jack's power as a stranger has received high marks, but he is the one raising the flag of rebellion.

Bats who were once Lufenians
The Lufenians who remained in the world were turned into bats by Astos. Bikke is aware that they are Astos' minions.

Darkness Manifest

The most wicked of the Chaos* which can be called darkness of the world itself

* Translator's note: Quick reminder that in Japanese, the four fiends are called the four chaos in addition to Chaos itself, so this description is basically the most wicked of them all!

The embodiment of chaos, born from the darkness across Cornelia. It appeared having taken shape as a response to the people's negative emotions and Jack's feelings. It attacks Jack ferociously to test his resolve in becoming Chaos.

Tiamat

Fiend of wind, stained with hatred

The fiend in control of wind who resides in the upper levels of the Flying Fortress. With the shape of a dragon with 6 heads, it not only creates tornadoes and storms, but has excellent restorative abilities. It has manifested through a combination of darkness, and Sophia's body - lost to an untimely death in a past cycle - and emotions.

Marilith

Fiend of fire, overflowing with rage

The fiend which controls fire, that had been slumbering in the depths of Mount Gulg. With the upper body of a woman and the lower body of a snake, it unleashes a fury of slashes with the blades it holds in its 6 arms. It formed in combination from Neon's emotions when she died with regret in a past cycle, and darkness.

Lich

Fiend of earth, strewn with fear

The fiend with power over earth, rotting the lands from deep within the Cavern of Earth. With the appearance of an enormous skeleton, it summons skeletal minions from the soil. It manifested when Ash's feelings from rotting away in despair in a past cycle, merged with darkness.

Kraken

Fiend of water, driven by envy

The fiend that wields the power of water, waiting in the depths of the Sunken Shrine. A humanoid creature with the appearance of a squid, it uses its long tentacles and large body to lunge forward and corner its opponents. It manifested through the combination of Jed's feelings of powerlessness when he succumbed in a past cycle, and darkness.

Astos & Ultima Weapon Enemy File

Director's comment, Inoue: If you're familiar with Astos from Final Fantasy I then his new design was surely a shock, but it was decided he'd be a more handsome character since the time Nomura brought in his proposal for the game. This came from the idea that Astos originally looked much more elf-like, but for some reason his appearance grew uglier in Final Fantasy I. Though his appearance has changed significantly from Mr. Amano's illustration for FFI, there are many details in common, such as accessories, his nails, and his slender body. The scarf-like fabric drawn in Mr. Amano's illustration also became the silhouette of his hood for this game. Yoji Ueda's voice acting was wonderful. Astos was burdened with so much due to his origins and his role, and I think that you get a glimpse of his darkness through his suspicious, unsettling words and actions. Incidentally, Astos became known as the Fool because of his trickster-like manner in guiding Jack and his comp

Extra Fool's Missives Complete Text

These Fool's Missives do not appear in game and are only published alongside the enemy data files in Confidential File. The numbering starts anew, as they're a separate collection of missives. They are also clearly written by Astos, but I'm not confident in my ability to reproduce his writing style, so please bear with my translations. It's also possible that the monsters' names are localized differently than the direct translations I'm taking from the book. I'll do my best to match the English localization, but if I miss anything, please leave a comment and let me know. Fool's Missive Extra I Goblin, Goblin Guard, Bogeyman Discards of Lufenian experimentation, some sort of creature that holds knowledge" Their appearance so hideous they wear masks to conceal it, they attack humans. Lufenian Report Analysis

The following passages expand upon existing Lufenian Report data. The Strangers' True Identity The Lufenians are using humans gathered from other planets to manage the balance of light and darkness in Cornelia. Without knowing this truth, Jack and his companions simply assume they are Lufenian, and consider Station 19 their homeland. In addition, their clothing (their starting equipment) are from their real homeland. Mechanisms of Recreation Lufenians use the term "reset" to describe using the power of the dimensional crystal matrix to go back in time and reconstruct the world.  The Lufenians have used this technology to control the balance of light and darkness through trial and error. In the event of a reset, the lives and memories of the Cornelians are rewound, but a portion of their memories remain in the world as a black mist. Interdimensional Collaborator The collaborator who initiated the Stranger Project has often advised the Lufenians since then, while requesting
